AFC South 2018 IDP Outlook: Change My Mind!
The Jaguars are such a stacked team and kudos to the office staff that has built mainly through the draft a dynamic defense that should be good for years to come. On the line you’ve got young up and comers like Yannick Ngakoue, Malik Jackson and (potentially) Dante Fowler & Dareus. At Linebacker, you’ve got studs like Telvin Smith and Myles Jack and in the secondary, you have Jalen Ramsey, AJ Bouye, Barry Church & Tashaun Gipson.
A name to keep an eye on is Leon Jacobs, a seventh-rounder who some didn’t expect to be on the team ascended to the strong side starter alongside Jack & Smith. Jacobs is a hard worker whom could be a nice stash for future value if he keeps working hard, impressing the vets around him with his knowledge and ability to pick up the game with ease.
Indianapolis, on the other hand, looks to be the opposite of Jacksonville, where their defense has been suspect for some time now. This year saw Indy dump a ton of draft capital into the defense, to go with some talent they already had in Malik Hooker, Jabaal Sheard, Clayton Geathers, and Matthias Farley. Incoming rookies to keep an eye are, well nearly all of them due to potential snaps and just genuinely being better than the options ahead of them on the depth chart.
Darius Leonard has already won himself a starting spot alongside nearly unknowns in Najee Goode and Anthony Walker. Rookies Matthew Adams, Skai Moore, and Zaire Franklin are names to keep on your watchlist as they could get on the field this season. Kemoko Turay looks like another player to get on the field early, based on draft pedigree and talent. With regards to the rest of the line outside of Sheard and Turay, I’m not really interested in any of them, as well as any of the corners to be painfully honest. I anticipate teams beating up on the colts on the sides of the field, as their safeties are a solid group but the cornerbacks leave a lot to be desired.
- Malik hooker
- Jabaal Sheard
- Darius Leonard
- Anthony Walker (or Adams based on who’s the Mike Backer)
- Clayton Geathers/Matthias Farley (whoever’s the healthy starter)
- Skai Moore
- Zaire Franklin
Tennessee is a team that either can be really scary good…or bad. With a new head coach, that’s a Belichick guy, and young in his coaching career, I’m not sure the stars are aligned in a good way but time will tell.
Wesley Woodyard is a guy who’s older but a good tackler and should produce well this year again. The move to a more 3-4 alignment should give value to guys like Will Compton (Rashaan Evans when they make him a starter), Derrick Morgan and Brian Orakpo but may decrease the value of Jurrell Casey, DaQuan Jones and Bennie Logan (even lower than they already are). And in the secondary, the loss of Cyprien early in camp will hurt the defense but you may not see a huge drop off as Kenny Vaccaro is a nice replacement.
The Texans always appear to be a team with a dominant defense, though I’m a person that’s lost hope for JJ Watt being the guy he used to be. Don’t get me wrong, if he slips in drafts I’ll jump all over getting him but won’t take him where he really deserves to go based on his talent. Christian Covington and DJ Reader, in my opinion, are better NFL players than fantasy assets, and I don’t see them on a ton of rosters in IDP leagues.
At Linebacker, give me all the shares of Texan Linebackers I can get! Zach Cunningham, Benardrick McKinney, Clowney, and Mercilus are all names to get earlier in drafts (probably in the order I just put them in). And in the secondary, Tyrann Mathieu coming over from Arizona could be huge for IDP owners, though I’m not sure how I feel about Kareem Jackson next to him, I’d personally like Justin Reid in that spot but maybe in time!
- Zach Cunningham
- JJ Watt
- Benardrick McKinney
- Tyrann Mathieu
- Jadeveon Clowney
- Kareem Jackson (or Justin Reid)
- Whitney Mercilus
